Growing food plants the forest way

Stage/s S1, S2, S3
Subject Science and Technology or Geography
Location Discovery Centre, Wollongong Botanic Garden
Cost $14.50 per student
Duration 2.5 hours

Rainforests have been looking after themselves for thousands of years and been home to a variety of plants, animals and fungi, yet people can struggle to grow a lettuce.

Students will learn about no-dig gardens which mirror the layers of the forest to grow food.

Students will:

  • Hear a story on the natural layering system of a forest
  • Make connections on how people can use the layering system to grow food
  • Make a mini no-dig garden and plant seeds
  • Participate in a waste audit of their lunch boxes and pose questions about waste management
  • Investigate different geological environments within the Botanic Garden to hypothesise about where soil comes from and is it an infinite resource.
